2 man held for smuggling Rs 46L worth gold at city airport

Coimbatore: Officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) detained two passengers from Sharjah at the Coimbatore International Airport on Sunday morning for smuggling 1.356kg of gold worth Rs 46.78 lakh.

The DRI said they received information that Usman, 23, of Malappuram, and Shajahan, 25, of Palakkad, were smuggling gold in Air Arabia flight from Sharjah to Coimbatore by concealing it in their rectum. “We identified and intercepted them as they emerged through the green channel. They admitted to smuggling gold. We recovered it. Gold was found to be mixed with some compound which was subsequently removed,” a DRI official said. “They also admitted that they involved in the smuggling for commission,” the official added.


They were arrested and later released on bail. Further investigation is on.
