GURUGRAM: The alleged kingpin of a fake driving licence racket, who was using the RTO hologram on forged documents, was nabbed by the crime branch on Saturday.
Akram, from Mewat’s Sudaka village, has been sent to two days’ police custody. Akram’s gang, which was active for the past two years, has created over 1,000 fake driving licences, mostly for cab drivers, police said. They used to charge between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 for making the forged documents.
Akram, who earlier worked as an agent for a driving school, had made many contacts during his job there, they said.
Later he opened his own office in Mewat, police said. His associates would look for clients in and around driving test areas and the regional transport office.
“Mostly drivers working for cab aggregators used to be his clients,” said in-charge, crime branch, Palam Vihar, Manoj Verma.
He added that the gang was in touch with a particular group that helped drivers work with aggregators.
The drivers used to approach the gang through middlemen to get a driving licence. The accused created fake licences in a manner that only the forensic experts could detect.
“An inquiry is on to find out how the accused managed to get the RTO hologram on fake licences,” the police said. The racket came to fore in September when police arrested a person with three fake driving licences.
During interrogation, the accused, Jallaudin, from Mewat, had revealed that Akram is the mastermind behind the scam.
“Following a tip-off regarding Akram's whereabouts, we formed a team to nab him. An officer was sent to him as a decoy customer. He contacted Akram for a driving licence. The accused took a photograph and in some time, he issued him a fake driving licence with the RTO hologram. We caught him red-handed while receiving payment for the forged document,” said Verma.
The police claim to have recovered computers, printers, scanners, keyboards, lamination equipment and seals of RTO, Gurgaon from his possession.
In a similar incident, the CM Flying Squad of Haryana, in August last year, had arrested a 25-year-old resident of Gurgaon with fake identity documents.
