PANCHKULA: A 39-year-old resident of Sector 7 fell for a lottery prize bait, losing Rs 3,350 to a fraudster, police said on Saturday after registering a case.
Roop Ram Jowal received a phone call from a man claiming himself to be a representative of “Naap Tol” lottery company from Odisha. He told Jowal that he had won a gold ring in a lottery. Jowal did not take the offer seriously but became interested after he found the phone was registered in the name of “Dhan Lakshmi” in his mobile application. He called back, giving his address and other details.
On January 29, a person calling himself Vishnu and claiming to be a courier delivery boy knocked on the door of Jowal. He handed over a package to Jowal in return of Rs 3,350 as delivery charges. When Jowal opened the package, he found a lottery winner certificate, a scratch-and-win coupon and a brass ring instead of a gold one. Jowal realised he was cheated. He tried calling the accused but not one responded. He then approached the police.
Police said the mobile application only provides details saved by the user and does not guarantee the real details of the caller. “We suggest not to believe calls claiming lottery prizes and gifts,” said cyber cell experts.
Police registered a case under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) at the Sector 5 police station.
On October 16, 2018, the wife of a Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer was duped of her money in an ATM fraud case after she gave details of her OTP (one time password) to a man claiming to be a bank representative.
