Ludhiana: A man opened fire in the air with his licencee rifle to support his brother in a spat with the latter’s wife in Chitti Colony of Salem Tabri on Friday evening. However, no one sustained any injuries.

Salem Tabri police registered a case under sections 336 (endangering the life or personal safety of others), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC and Arms Act against husband Harbhajan Singh and his brother Gurbhej Singh.

Complainant Harjeet Kaur (38) said she was married to Harbhajan for more than two decades, bearing three children from the marriage. As she suspected her husband of having an extra-marital affair, he started living separately in another house in the same village.

She alleged that on Friday evening, while she was standing outside her house, talking to some neighbours, her husband came there and started abusing her. He started questioning why she was standing outside the house, and started beating her. Meanwhile, her son Harpreet, nephew Gurwinder, and sister Ranjeet came to her rescue, after which Harbhajan ran away from there. However, minutes later, he started pelting stones at her from his brother’s house, which is near his wife’s house. Then, Gurbhej took out his licencee .12 bore rifle and opened fire in the air.

Investigating officer ASI Baljeet Singh said police reached the spot and arrested both the accused. Cops have also recovered the rifle from accused.
