Karnataka Kusti Habba in Belagavi from Feb 7

Belagavi: The state government will hold Karnataka Kusti Habba, a first of its kind four-day wrestling tournament in Belagavi from February 7. Forest minister Satish Jarkiholi will inaugurate the event at the district stadium, said DC S B Bommanahalli.
At a press conference here on Saturday, the DC said the event will have competitions in six sections based on gender and weight. More than 750 wrestlers are expected to take part in it. The government has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the event out of which Rs 85 lakh has been earmarked for prize money. “Since the amount is insufficient, a proposal seeking an additional Rs 75 lakh has sent to the government.
The district administration will arrange food, accommodation, transportation and parking for the participants,” he said.
Bommanhalli said bouts of nationally and internationally acclaimed wrestlers will be conducted on the last day of the event. Wrestlers from Georgia and Azerbaijan will perform on the day.
K Shrinivas, commissioner of youth empowerment and sports department, BUDA commissioner Preetam Nasalapure, president of Indian style wrestling Ratankumar Mathapati and medical officer of Belagavi City Corporation Dr Shashidhar Nadagouda were present.
