BHUBANESWAR: Former Congress MLA from Koraput Krushna Chandra Sagaria joined Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) here on Sunday. After joining the party, he said if BSF chief Mayawati wants he would like to contest against chief minister Naveen Patnaik in the coming election.
“Congress expelled me from the party for indiscipline behaviour but they never explained what the indiscipline act I did. I spoke but the constitutional rights of the people of scheduled tribe (ST), scheduled caste (SC), other backward classes (ONC) and minority people. I demanded the Congress to speak for them and it was my fault. BSP has been fighting for them so I decided to join the party,” said Sagaria after joining BSP at a public meeting at Mahatma Gandhi Marg here.

When asked from where he would contest the election this time, Sagaria said, “If BSP party and Mayawati wants he would like to contest against the chief minister in the coming election.”

Criticising the Naveen Patnaik government he said, “In the last 20 years Odisha has topped the list of poor states. Number of liquor shops increased four times in the state in Naven’s four terms while people don’t have access to drinking water.”

He said, he would visit all 30 districts of the state and create awareness among the ST, SC, OBC and minority communities about their social, economic and constitutional rights.

“While ST and SC constitute 40% of the state’s population they get 20% reservation in medical and engineering. Similarly OBC constitutes 54% but get zero reservation in education and 11.5% reservation in jobs. If we are not getting our rights then why should we vote them? I am confident that these people will make a right choice this time,” Sagaria added.

The BSP had fielded 21 candidates in Lok Sabha and 113 Assembly seats in 2014 general elections.

Sagaria had resigned as the Member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Koraput on November 6, 2018 for failing to provide justice to Kunduli minor gang rape victim. The minor girl was reportedly gang-raped on October 10, 2017 and later committed suicide in her house on January 22, 2018. The incident had caused public outrage across the state.

Congress expelled Sagaria from the primary membership of the party for indiscipline behaviour on January 19, this year.
