Fearing consequences of divorce, woman ends life

Patel coupleSURAT: Unable to bear the possibility of divorce due to the problem of infertility, a 29-year-old homeopathic doctor committed suicide by hanging self from the ceiling fan of her house in Adajan on Friday.
The family members of the deceased, identified as Manali Patel, a homeopathic doctor employed in a hospital, lodged a complaint of suicide abetment against her husband Chintan Patel, a gynecologist at a city hospital. Following this, police detained Chintan for questioning.
Before ending life Manali had sent images of her suicide note to her brother on WhatsApp. When Manali did not open her room for a long time, her family members forced open the door and found her hanging.
“Our preliminary investigation has revealed that Manali was upset as her husband and in-laws wanted divorce as the couple did not have a child,” said an investigating official from Adajan police station.
“Though we have recovered the WhatsApp images of the five-page suicide note that Manali had sent to her brother, we are yet to recover the physical copy of it. We will thoroughly check her bedroom to recover the note,” said the official.
In the five pages, she addressed two pages to her husband Chintan, a gynecologist at a city hospital, and three pages to her parents. “The deceased did not mention any specific harassment by the in-laws, but she was upset with the discussion about divorce. Her parents and in-laws were discussing divorce of the couple as they had no children,” said the official.
After the mention of divorce, she had become upset and gone to stay with her parents. She returned to Chintan a week ago. However since then, Chintan had been sleeping separately from her in another room.
The couple had got married in 2013 in an arranged marriage. Both had taken a medical assistance to conceive a child, but to no avail.
Manali’s body was sent to New Civil Hospital where the postmortem was conducted on Saturday. Then it was handed over to Manali’s parents who performed her last rites.
