PUNE: The expert committee constituted by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has recommended that the board make an alternative arrangement for slaughtering of chicken in accordance with the Cantonment Act, 2006, at the Shivaji Market.
The committee submitted its report to the civic body recently. The panel stated that slaughtering leads to release of blood and other residue into the drainage, leading to unhygienic condition in and around the slaughtering shops at the market.
Ashok Pawar, a member of the panel, told TOI, “The residue and leftovers are being released directly into drainage pipeline, which is connected to the sewage treatment plant (STP) of Bootee Street. Because of this, the functioning of STP had been affected in the past.”
The board had in the past acted against illegal chicken shops not only in the market but also in other areas of the cantonment. However, these shops came up again.
The board does not have adequate land in and around Shivaji Market for making alternative arrangements.
Chief executive officer DN Yadav of PCB said, “As far as illegal chicken slaughtering and finding of an alternative place is concerned, the board will take a final decision at the next board meeting.” senior official said the board needs to shift the activities to Lullanagar slaughter house. “This facility is equipped with all required infrastructure and, hence, it is functioning smoothly,” the official added.
