PUNE: The city-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) recently replicated its pollution monitoring ‘System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research’ (SAFAR) at the Kumbh Mela.
Automatic weather stations (AWS) have been installed at four locations in Prayagraj and a weather station mounted on a SAFAR-mobile van has also deployed at Sector 18 of the Kumbh Mela area.

An IITM source said the observational sites are distributed in all four directions within a 5-10km radius. “They are located at Allahabad University, Delhi Public School, GB Pant Social Science Institute and Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences,” the source said.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) through IITM launched special weather services for the benefit of people visiting Prayagraj during the Kumbh Mela.

A mobile application ‘Kumbh Mela Weather Service’ has also been developed to disseminate real-time weather information, such as temperature, humidity, rainfall and winds, at the four sites. It will provide weather forecast and warnings for Prayagraj for a three-day period.

A source said the real-time location specific weather information will be helpful for the local and state authorities for efficient management of the event. It will also benefit pilgrims by keeping them up-to-date with the latest weather information.

IITM’s SAFAR aims to increase awareness among citizens about air quality in their city in advance, so that appropriate mitigation measures and systematic action can be taken to improve it and other related health issues.
