LUCKNOW: The Special Task Force (STF) busted a gang that looted shipments from containers attached to online shopping company Amazon on Saturday night. The arrests followed an encounter in Banthra with criminals, who committed 20 similar loots in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat and amassed goods worth Rs 5 crore.
Those arrested were Prabhas Sharma and Naresh of Aligarh, Shivam Dubey of Mainpuri, Girija Shanker Pal of Talkatora, Nishant Chaudhary of Bulandshahr, Mathura resident Raju and Ram Babu from Unnao. The team seized Rs 30,200 in cash, an SUV, a bike, two countrymade pistols, live cartridges and tools to break locks. Their booty included 20 mobile handsets and accessories, winter-wear like jeans, blazers and coats. Police said team was tipped off about the gang which was to target a container in Banthra.
ASP (STF) Vishal Vikram Singh said an SUV was trailing a container moments after it came out of an Amazon warehouse in Banthra. Police trailed the SUV which quickly overtook the container at a canal bank in Kaithi village in Banthra and the criminals stopped the vehicle and began smashing its locks.
“The police team challenged the goons, who opened fire. Cops retaliated and overpowered the criminals,” said Singh. While Girija Pal was a guard at the Amazon warehouse in Banthra, Prabash Sharma was the mastermind.
Sharma confessed he and his aides would stop containers in a deserted area by force or making drivers accomplice in the crime. The security guard Pal had tipped them off about movement of containers. “They would enter the containers and loot while their aides would keep the vehicle moving to skirt police detection. Kingpin Sharma and his aides would trail the container in a SUV,” said ASP Vishal Singh.
