Four killed in accidents on Madurai-Tiruchi highway

Four persons riding on two-wheelers were killed in two separate accidents reported on the Madurai-Tiruchi highway near Melur on Friday.

In the first accident, three persons were killed when a speeding car knocked them down as they were riding on two-wheelers near Vinayakapuram. The police identified the deceased as M. Pandi, 50, of Melur and S. Maheswari, 37, and P. Ramesh, 40, of Pudutamaraipatti. The police said that while Pandi, a small-time incense stick salesman, was riding a bike, the other two, who were relatives, were on a scooter. All the three were proceeding towards Madurai when the car, coming to Madurai from Villuppuram rammed the two-wheelers one after the other. The speeding car along with the bikes fell into a roadside gorge. While Pandi and Maheswari were killed on the spot, Ramesh who was rushed to GRH, was declared brought dead. The incident occurred at around 10.50 a.m.

Meanwhile, a little later, in a similar accident, one K. Selvaraj, 37, of Muthukaruppanpatti near Melur was killed near the North by-pass Road along the four-way. The police said that the deceased was crossing the road after visiting a tea shop when a car proceeding from Chennai towards Nagercoil knocked him down at around 1 p.m.
