Abandoned by children, elderly couple end lives
TNN | Feb 2, 2019, 23:48 ISTCoimbatore: Two elderly couples have committed suicide by consuming poison in two separate incidents in the city on Friday night.
In the first incident, R Palanisamy, 65, and his wife P Kaliyammal, 55, killed themselves at their residence at Mani Nagar near Saravanampatti as they were not reportedly taken care of by their children.
The couple are survived by three daughters and a son. “All of them are married and residing in other places. The couple couldn’t earn enough to make a living and they were struggling to pay even the house rent. Pained at their children’s unwillingness to help them out, they consumed poison. Neighbours found them dead and alerted us on Friday night,” a police officer attached to the Saravanampatti police station said.
Police immediately sent the bodies to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and it was handed over to the family members after postmortem on Saturday. The Saravanampatti police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
In another incident, saddened by their son’s family issues, K Subramaniam, 75 and his wife S Nachammal, 68, ended their lives in their house at Perur on Friday night. Police said, their son S Karthik, 39, had separated from his wife Jayapratha six months ago after 15 years of married life.
Following their separation, Subramaniam and Nachammal were a depressed lot and consumed poison on Friday night, a police officer said. The Perur police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
