The entire road has been blocked off and traffic was forced to a near standstill.
The fig tree fell across the intersection of Margaret and York Streets, sending traffic into chaos and paramedics rushing to the scene.

One person was injured after the tree fell, an NSW Ambulance spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
Bystanders have said they are 'amazed' that only one person appeared to have been hurt as the tree fell onto the busy street.
Another said: 'Considering the amount of work going under & around Wynyard Park I’m amazed any of them are still standing.'
Cars were forced to divert their routes while pedestrians had to move out of the way.
Ambulance and police officers arrived shortly after 6pm and helped to clear traffic congestion and move pedestrians along.
Police have blocked off the area with tape and are currently investigating the circumstances.
Bystanders commended the 'quick work' of officers, who arrived on the scene within minutes of the incident.
