The much-delayed mega silk cluster for Mysuru has finally received the State Cabinet’s approval.

The cluster, which is expected to house facilities from post-cocoon stage to fabric manufacturing and sale, will come up on 11 acres at Belavadi in Yelwala hobli on the outskirts of Mysuru.

Minister for Higher Education G.T. Deve Gowda, who is also the district in-charge and who represents Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency, which includes Yelwala hobli, said the silk cluster, a joint venture by the State and Centre, would come up at a cost of ₹49 crore.

Mr. Gowda said the facility would serve as an extension centre for silk marketing and would create a number of jobs.

Meanwhile, N.Y. Chigari, CEO of Koppa Sericulture Farmers’ Producer Company Ltd., Maddur, a Government of India enterprise, told The Hindu that the mega silk cluster would offer state-of-the-art infrastructure to reelers, weavers and other stakeholders in the sericulture industry, except cocoon growers.
