FALL RIVER — A Fall River man was injured in an apartment fire on South Main Street on Saturday afternoon, the city's second fire in less than 24 hours.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., firefighters arrived on scene at 2332 S. Main St., near the intersection of Shove Street, to find smoke pouring out of the second and third floors of a multi-family home.

Six people were evacuated from the four-unit building, including the occupant of the apartment where the fire originated, a 39-year-old man who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence with burns.

No firefighters were injured, but Fire Chief John Lynch said a police officer was treated for smoke inhalation.

Lynch said the fire was extinguished just before 12:30 p.m. The fire's cause is under investigation, but Lynch said there was some speculation it may have started when the injured man was cooking with oil.

The occupants of the home remain displaced.

It was the department's second fire in less than a day -- on Friday evening, a fire broke out at The Mount Apartments on Middle and Second streets in a fourth-floor unit.
