AGRA: Stirring up a hornet’s nest, Naveen Jain, Agra’s BJP mayor on Saturday claimed that AMU is the hub of anti-national activity and is also promoting terrorism.
The mayor’s statement comes on the backdrop of objection raised by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration on the ‘Tiranga Yatra’ inside the campus around Republic Day.
He said, “AMU is a hub of anti-national activities and it promotes terrorism. Those who opposed to the Tiranga Yatra are anti-nationals and must be booked under sedition.”
Taking further dig at AMU, he said, “The word muslim must be removed from AMU as it’s a secular country and all religion are equal. No other university in the country highlights a particular religion.”
When questioned about Banaras Hindu University’s name, he said , “There is nothing wrong with ‘Hindu’ word in BHU, because even Muslims are Hindu and our country is Hindustan. Hinduism is a way of life and signifies culture not religion.”
Supporting Jain’s statement, Aligarh MP Satish Gautam said, “When Afzal Guru, Ajmal Kasab, Burhan Wani are hanged, people in AMU offer namaz (prayers) and take out candle light marches, but when some student leaders takes out ‘Tiranga Yatra’ the AMU administrations issues notice. This shows the true colour of certain people associated with the university and its administration.”
Meanwhile, reacting to the mayor’s statement, Salman Imtiaz, the president of Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union (AMUSU) said, “We are not terrorist and our students are engaged in various research works. Our works are also universally accepted and recognised by premium institutes. We are the ones who pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, unlike those right wing men who pray and build temple for Nathuram Godse. One should think before labelling us terrorists.”
Mohammad Nadem Ansari, former AMU vice-president said, “Few students in connivance with Bajrang Dal and RSS took out ‘Tiranga Yatra’ with the intention to create a situation like Kasganj. We want the university administration to take action against these students, or we will set bhagwa (saffron) flag ablaze on February 20.”
