Thiruvananthapuram: A police constable, who was attacked and injured by SFI activists a month ago, was suspended from service on Saturday.
Special armed police commandant T F Xavier placed constable S S Sarath under suspension on Saturday based on a directive from the police headquarters.

Xavier said action has been taken for sharing social media posts defaming the chief minister as well as the government. Police officers have been banned from sharing defamatory posts or criticise the government on social media.

“He was placed under suspension based on directive from the police headquarters,” the commandant said. The inquiry was initiated much before he was attacked. He frequently shared messages on his Facebook page as well as on WhatsApp groups against the CM and the government. An inquiry was initiated after receiving a complaint in this regard from a resident of Valakom in Kollam, Sarath’s home village.

Incidentally, Sarath was suspended three days after the prime suspect in the attack case, SFI activist Nazeem of University College surrendered before the police.

Nazeem and his collegemates had attacked Sarath and his colleague at Palayam Junction on December 12. The cop was hospitalized following the attack.
