Dropping a 2JZ engine into the GT86/86 platform is hardly original, but this particular application is one of the fastest we’ve seen.

Brady Johnson’s bright green Scion FR-S, aka Toyota 86 since the Japanese automaker axed its ‘youthful’ brand in 2016, has been evolving through the years and now runs a frankly ridiculous 51psi (3.5 bar) of boost, resulting into very impressive quarter mile times.

The latest version of the factory frame FR-S comes with a properly built 2JZ that’s accompanied by a 76mm Precision turbocharger and nitrous that helps into spooling the turbo faster for faster launches.

All this amounts to a personal best time of 7.57 seconds in the quarter mile at 181 mph (291 km/h). On the dyno, the engine produced 1,200hp at 40psi, but they had to stop as the car was spinning every time they cranked up the boost.

You won’t see these numbers with an FA20 engine, certainly not that easily and reliably as with the legendary 2JZ-GTE, one of the strongest engines created to this date, as proven by countless tuning jobs that have hugely increased its output. And that’s for a unit that came with 280-330 PS (276-325 HP) in factory form under the bonnet of the fourth-gen Supra.

Considering that this, according to Johnson, is an FR-S with an original chassis complete with factory subframes, that’s one mega achievement.
