Furore after video shows men damaging pillars of ancient Hampi monument

HAMPI/KARNATAKA: A video on social media showing three men purportedly damaging pillars at Hampi UNESCO World Heritage Site has created a furore.
Locals staged protest soon after the video, in which the miscreants can be seen pushing a pillar, began circulating on social media and demanded adequate protection for the monument.
Following the incident, Karnataka police inspected the ancient site and said the accused will be arrested soon.
"There are likely 4-5 people involved in it. Accused will be arrested and prosecuted," Bellary SP Arun Rangarajan said.
The development comes just days after the Times Magazine listed the Hampi World Heritage site as the second must-see place in 2019.
Hampi, an ancient village in Karnataka, is dotted with numerous ruined temple complexes from the Vijayanagara Empire. It is believed to have been the country's richest city, which attracted traders from Persia and Portugal.
