NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has registered a case against AAP MLA from Kasturba Nagar, Madan Lal, for trying to stop railway officials from removing encroachments around rail tracks near Lodhi Colony area earlier this week. Lal and his supporters had allegedly tried to push away railway officials trying to demolish JJ colonies along rail tracks.
Police said they had received a complaint from the northern railway, Delhi division, a few days ago.
“The incident occurred while an anti-encroachment drive was taking place between Safdarjung and Lajpat Nagar on the ring railway network. We were clearing shanties and other temporary encroachments when the MLA tried to stop it. Threatening language was also used, as a result of which a complaint was made,” said a senior railway official.
Lal, however, claimed he had asked the railway officials to arrange for an alternative place for the residents before demolishing, which they refused. “All the shacks that were demolished had electric meters, and the residents have been staying there for years now. I asked the railway authorities to give them a few days’ notice first and then go for the demolition but the officials didn’t listen,” he said.
DCP (south) Vijay Kumar said an FIR under Section 353 IPC (using criminal force to stop a public servant from conducting their duties) and 186 IPC (preventing a public servant from conducting duties) has been registered against Lal.
Lal would be called for questioning soon. The railway officials have also given cops a copy of the video of the incident that is being analysed.
