SURAT: A railway booking clerk employed at Surat railway station is facing inquiry after his video driving a passenger train on the Tapti line from Surat to Jalgaon went viral on Thursday.

Official sources said that Ravindra More, 38, a booking clerk employed at the Athwalines passenger reservation centre (PRS) is facing inquiry for driving more than 700 passenger onboard the Surat-Jalgaon passenger train. A video shows that the clerk was seated on the loco pilot seat and was taking instructions for increasing and decreasing the speed of the engine.

In a 20 second video, the clerk operated the locomotive engine for about 10 km at the speed of 60 km per hour.

Talking with TOI, area railway manager (ARO), CR Garuda said, "We are in possession of the video where the booking clerk is seen driving a loco engine of a passenger train on Surat-Jalgaon route. The video is quite old, but the inquiry has been started against the clerk. A detailed report will be submitted to the headquarters for action against the clerk."

Garuda added, "As per the Indian railway rules, even the assistant loco-pilot is not allowed to take control of the loco engine in absence of the loco pilot. We had called the clerk for taking his version, but he did not turned up for some health reasons."

A senior loco pilot said, "Only loco pilot is authorised to enter into locomotive engine as per the running staff manual of the Indian railways. The safety of hundreds of passengers onboard the passenger train is entirely shouldered on the loco pilot. A minor mistake could claim hundreds of lives. This incident of a clerk driving a passenger train is serious lapse in safety and it should be invested thoroughly."

Garuda said, "The inquiry of the loco pilot giving instruction to the clerk on increasing and decreasing the speed of the train is yet to be identified. We have circulated the video to other stations on the western railway and Tapti lines to verify the name of the loco pilot seen in the video."
