African teenager, 16, is arrested over 'the assault and robbery of two teenage boys at a Melbourne train station'

  • 16-year-old has been arrested for an alleged assault and robbery in Melbourne 
  • The boy is believed to be one of a gang of youths who took part in the attack
  • Police arrested him this morning and he's expected to be charged later today
  • Two boys, 14 and 17, were allegedly robbed and assault at a bus stop in January 
  • Victoria police are still searching for another African teenage suspect  

An African teenager has been arrested for the alleged assault and robbery of two young boys.

The 16-year-old male from Brookfield, a suburb of Melbourne, is believed to be one of the gang of youths that allegedly set upon a 14-year-old boy and 16-year-old boy in an unprovoked attack at a Wyndham Vale bus stop on January 27. 

The teenager was taken into custody by Transit Crime Investigation Unit earlier today, after detectives executed a search warrant at an address on Turpentine Road.

It's understood he will be charged with assault and robbery later on Saturday.

The arrest comes shortly after the police made a public appeal for information, in which they released images of two of the alleged suspects.  

Police are continuing to appeal for public assistance in relation to a second male who may be able to assist with inquires in relation to the alleged incident .

He is described as being of African appearance with a slim build and was wearing a Puma jumper at the time of the incident.

The alleged victims, Xavier, 14, and Ricky, 17, were waiting for a bus home at the station when a group of around 20 youths targeted them. 

Xavier was allegedly robbed of a bank card, iPhone and a $1,000 gold necklace by the gang.

While Xavier was allegedly assaulted, Ricky is thought to have tried to fight back.

Both boys are believed to have sustained minor injuries in the alleged incident.
