Baby boy weighing 2.7 kg named Abdul Kalam

A hi-tech Ammathottil (electronic cradle) inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare, Thycaud, a day ago received its first infant on Saturday.

The six-day-old baby was left in the cradle at 4.30 p.m. Immediately, a beep sounded in the adoption centre of the council, announcing its arrival. The computer monitor in the nursing superintendent’s room also relayed a photograph of the child and its weight.

Nurses on duty Sheeja S.T. and Surya Raju reached the Ammathotill and brought the child to the adoption centre. The child, healthy and weighing 2.7 kg, was named Abdul Kalam after the former President of the country by council general secretary Deepak S.P.

Abdul Kalam is the 263rd child to be received since the Ammathottil cradles were set up in 2002.

Mr. Deepak said the baby’s adoption process had to be set in motion and any claimants to him should get in touch with the council authorities.
