Marina set to be free of illegal vendors soon

CHENNAI: The Marina beach will soon be free of unauthorized vending.
A meeting on Friday decided that the more than 2,000 vendors along the famous sands will be realigned under by-laws framed as per the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 and the Madras high court order.

The meeting, in which corporation commissioner D Karthikeyan and police commissioner A K Vishwanathan among others took part, also decided to shift the fish market from along Loop Road to that being constructed by the corporation. “Besides food vendors, there are several phone repair shops and other kiosks near Anna Square. All those who are not authorized and enumerated under the Street Vendors Act, 2014, will have to move out,” said a corporation official.

The to-be formed Town Vending Committee will decide on authorization of vendors. The beach will be split into vending and non-vending zones and periodic checks conducted to ensure illegal vendors have no place there. Vendors will be streamlined in rows of two to nine in vending zones along the 2.5km stretch.

“There will be four parallel rows along the stretch from Labor Statue to the corporation-run Anna Swimming Pool. There will also be restrictions on height and dimensions of the shops,” said an official.

Sources in the corporation said that draft by-laws for regularization of vendors will be in place before the next hearing in the Madras high court that is scheduled for February 5.

However, fisherfolk are strictly opposed to moving out of Loop Road for fear of losing business. “There are regular visitors to the beach who buy from us. If we are moved several kilometers away, who will buy from us,” asked a fisherwoman.

Senior corporation officials, however, said there will be no change in the decision to relocate fish vendors from the Loop Road based on the Court direction.

To improve security at the beach, it was decided to deploy at least 50 police personnel round the clock.

Corporation health department officials said that beach cleaning machines will be used through the day to ensure that the sands are clean. All the authorized vendors will be discouraged from using banned plastic to keep the beach plastic and litter-free.
