MANDYA: The increasing possibility of Sumalatha, wife of late Ambareesh, taking the political plunge, either as an independent or as a Congress candidate, is changing the poll scene in Mandya district.
Sumalatha, who met Ambareesh’s fans and supporters from Mandya district on Friday, said she’d take a decision about contesting based on how people accept her candidature. “I need to access the sentiments of the people of Mandya as their wishes matter a lot to me,” she told them.
Meanwhile, disgruntled Congress leaders, including N Cheluvarayaswamy and Ramesh Babu who defected to the Congress from JD(S), are trying to rope in Sumalatha as Congress candidate because they don’t want to lose Mandya parliamentary segment to the JD(S) which may field Nikhil Kumaraswamy, the son of chief minister HD Kumaraswamy.
“If the Congress leadership doesn’t agree to Sumalatha’s candidature, we’re ready to field her as an independent candidate to counter the influence of JD(S),” said a Congress leader.
