B K Birla College in Kalyan, which has been successfully running arts, science and commerce courses for years, will soon offer popular courses in the night section too. Director (education) from Birla College, Naresh Chandra, said there is a demand for distance education courses in Kalyan. “Once regular courses are offered in the evening class, the numbers of aspirants are likely to go up. We want to give these students an opportunity to complete their studies through regular mode at a nominal fee,” said the director.

Explaining the increasing demand for night colleges, Ranjan Patra, principal of Vikas Night College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Vikhroli, said of the nearly 4,000 students enrolled at their college, 60% have opted to study in the night section. “Our night college started only with the commerce course in 1986 and has grown considerably ever since. Now we offer eight undergraduate and five postgraduate courses. We also have a Ph D section,” said the principal.

A university official said MU has started offering several self-financed professional courses such as BMS, B Com (Accounting and Financed), B Sc-IT in the last few years. “Courses such as these are job oriented and, therefore, in great demand.”

The university’s perspective plan, too, had laid down the requirement for night and law colleges. The university had received 67 applications for new colleges. Ten each of the applications received were for night and law colleges.
