LUDHIANA: A 55-year-old man died under mysterious circumstances at division 7 police station on Friday.
Ruling out any foul play, police said Surjit Singh, a resident of GK Estate in Mundiyan Kalan, died of cardiac arrest.
Police had called Surjit in a case related to his son’s engagement.
“Surjit’s son, Karan, had got engaged to a girl of Jamalpur Colony about eight months ago. After their engagement broke off, the girl’s family lodged a complaint with division 7 police, seeking their help in getting back gold ornaments and other valuables they had given to Karan’s family. On Friday, both the families had come to the station to settle the issue,” said Division 7 SHO Rajesh Thakur.
“Surjit told the girl’s family that they will return all their belongings. Both the parties were leaving the police station when Surjit complained of severe chest pain. He was rushed to a private hospital in Samrala Chowk, where doctors declared that he has died of cardiac arrest,” he added.
Surjit had a history of cardiac problems and was taking treatment from Delhi. He didn’t die in police custody, the SHO said.
Additional deputy commissioner of police-IV Rajvir Singh Boparai said, “Cops did not question Surjit. The two parties had come to the police station to settle the issue, which they did amicably. We will initiate inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC and record the statement of his family.”
