Taking serious note of disparaging statements made by some Congress leaders against the coalition government and the Chief Minister, the Congress central leadership has directed the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to take strong action against those who attempt to jeopardise the coalition.

Disturbed over the recent developments within the party in Karnataka, the central leadership has asked the KPCC to ensure there is discipline among Congress representatives and workers.

AICC in charge of Karnataka K.C. Venugopal told The Hindu that any such statements aimed at damaging the coalition mantra would be treated seriously.

Rubbishing reports that some Congressmen were making it hard for the Chief Minister to function, Mr. Venugopal said, “There is no serious issue. Of course some controversial statements were made. But, the Congress high command has taken strong stand against such statements.” He, however, admitted to “some issues and difference of opinion between leaders of the two parties, especially those who fought against each other during elections.”

“Generally, for the smooth functioning of a coalition government it is the duty of each party to ensure discipline among the party cadres and office-bearers. We have directed the KPCC to take strong action against those who make statements against the coalition government and the Chief Minister, and treat such statements seriously. I have already spoken to the Chief Minister regarding this and I believe he (the Chief Minister) has understood the Congress party’s stand,” he said.

He said the parties now have a broader understanding to keep the BJP away from power. “Therefore, whenever such difference of opinion emerges, we will sort it out between ourselves. The Congress high command is very clear in its stand that this coalition government will complete its term,” he said.
