NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi government to furnish a performance guarantee of Rs 5 crore within a month for failing to act against illegal scrap units operating in Mayapuri.
A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed an oversight committee, headed by a former high court judge, to monitor the working of a seven-member special task force assigned to take action against these units involved in dismantling of heavy vehicles. It further asked the Delhi chief secretary to furnish a report on the matter on March 11, asking to personally be present on the date.
NGT had taken cognisance of a TOI report highlighting how despite NGT orders, an illegal scrap market was flourishing in the area.
“Proceedings have been initiated in view that there is scrap business at Mayapuri, Delhi, worth Rs 6,000 crores per annum. The activities of the said business spews toxic fumes, and chemicals and oils are also emitted. Such toxic fumes create severe air pollution affecting public health,” the NGT had noted.
The tribunal said it was open to the government taking action against erring officers and the polluters to act as a deterrent in the future. In an affidavit submitted by the Delhi government, the tribunal observed that no amount had been collected from any of the polluters despite 34 illegal units operating there.
“The above affidavit shows a grim picture of lackadaisical performance by the statutory authorities, including Delhi Pollution Control Committee,” the bench said.
