Day after inauguration, ruckus erupts at hospital

SURAT: Relatives of a patient who died during treatment created ruckus at Venus Hospital in Laldarwaja area of the city on Thursday. They said negligence was reason that resulted in the death of the patient, compelling hospital authorities to call police and send the body for panel postmortem. Meanwhile, police have registered a case of accidental death and begun investigations. Usha Parmar, 65, died during cardiac procedure on Thursday morning. The hospital was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the city on Wednesday.
Hospital sources said the patient was admitted to hospital on January 28, which was still awaiting official inauguration. Usha had chest pain and angiography on January 5 and 6 found that she had clogged arteries. However, as her son was to get married on January 10 she got admitted to the hospital only on January 28.
During the procedure to remove blockages in her arteries on Thursday, Usha died. Hospital authorities said the patient’s wall of the heart was very thin and it collapsed during the procedure resulting in her death. Sevanti Shah, one of the promoters of Venus Hospital, said, “We have asked for panel postmortem of the body. There was absolutely no negligence from our side.”
The case of accidental death has been registered at Lalgate police station. Further action in the case will be taken after they receive postmortem report, police said.
