Army to conduct field training exercise with African nations
Sandip Dighe | TNN | Updated: Feb 1, 2019, 23:24 ISTPUNE: The final planning conference to work out the modalities for Africa - India Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX-2019) was conducted at Pune recently.
Delegates from India, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, South Africa, Tanzania, Namibia, Mozambique, Uganda, Niger, Zambia & Rwanda attended the conference.
“Africa - India Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX-2019) is scheduled to be conducted at Aundh Military Station and College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune from March 18 to March 27 this year. The joint training exercise is being conducted with more than a dozen African countries & India. It aims at synergising humanitarian mine action and joint peace operations. The initial planning conference for the exercise was held in December 2018,” a press release issued by the Southern Command of Indian Army states.
“The exercise is a positive step towards growing political and military ties with the member nations of the African continent and will boost the already strong strategic cooperation between the countries,” a senior Army officer told TOI.
The Indian Army has been imparting mine detection and disposal training to various friendly nations for the past few years.
“Over the years, the Indian Army’s troops have developed unique strategies in detecting disposing different types of mines in varied geographical and weather conditions. As a result, several foreign countries are showing interest in learning our tactics to counter this menace,” said another senior officer.
