Cape Town - Talented young players will have a rare opportunity to learn from influential role players in the global game when the third edition of the Spanish/South African Tennis Camp is hosted by Prosat Tennis Academy in Pretoria this week.

The three-day development camp, which starts on Friday at Curro Hazeldean primary school, will include 52 junior tennis prospects who will hone their knowledge and skills both on and off the court.

The camp will feature Jorge Aguirre, a former coach of the Spanish junior team who guided Alejandro Davidovich to the Wimbledon junior title in 2017, and Chris Vermeeren, a partner at the Tennis Group Academy in Malaga and former global director of tennis at Nike where he famously signed Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova.

Aguirre and Vermeeren will share their insights on, among other key elements, player development and structural changes in the sport through the various age groups.

"I think this is a game changer," says Frans Cronje, director of excellence at Curro Hazeldean.

"It has been a huge success before and we expect it to be a huge success again."

Aguirre and Vermeeren, meanwhile, will also assist in putting up clay courts at Curro Hazeldean, which will give local players a chance to develop their game on the slower surface.

During this week's camp, the visitors will offer some additional insight on how to prepare and compete on clay courts.

"In South Africa we've mainly got hard courts," Cronje says.

"So hopefully this will help players prepare better for the clay court season, which is something we really need."
