A young tradesman is lucky to be alive after he was knocked to the ground following a single coward's punch to the head. 

Footage of the callous attack show the 22-year-old victim's head hit the pavement after he was assaulted at Northbridge in Perth's city centre on Australia Day night.

In the clip, the young man is seen lying limp on the concrete while his alleged attackers appear remorseless.

The victim told Yahoo! 7 that the only reason he believes he survived the coward punch was due to breaking the fall with his shoulder.  

'He just dropped, he hit the floor,' the man's friend said of the punch's aftermath. 

Both the victim and his friend, Andrew, said they remain perplexed at what caused the violence.

'I really do not understand why someone would want to do that,' he said, adding: 'it's cowardly'.

Both men said they were punched by the alleged gang and still fear revealing their identities due to the chance of a retaliation attack.  

In the lead-up to the assault, the pair said they were followed by a group of teens before the punches were thrown. 

An iPhone and a pair of limited edition runners were stolen in the alleged loot, with the perpetrators still on the run.
