Plea to deploy police youth brigade

This unit discontinued its services a year ago

Due to non-continuance of the services of a police youth brigade at SIDCO Nagar junction on Chennai-Tiruvallur High (CTH) Road in Villivakkam, pedestrians find it difficult to cross the road. For more than a year now, the youth brigade has not been offering his service as members are not happy with the stipend offered by the Police Department.

A traffic signal at SIDCO Nagar junction has not been functioning for many months. At night, due to poor illumination on the stretch, between Padi flyover and Villivakkam junction, crossing the road is risky for pedestrians as motorists speed and do not bother to stop for pedestrians. There is a pedestrian-crossing near the junction and a police booth from which police personnel monitor the movement of vehicles. However, considering the volume of traffic at the junction, mere presence of a police booth and a zebra-crossing is of little use to pedestrians, especially school children. Representations seeking deployment of traffic police personnel, including a police youth brigade, keep pouring in at the Villivakkam police station.

“Steps will be taken soon to deploy traffic policemen at the junction,” say police sources.
