Free counselling for students to overcome exam phobia

Mysuru: As pre-university course exams results are crucial for students to continue higher studies, they’re under a lot of stress and fear. To help students overcome exam phobia, district authorities of the department of pre-university education plans to provide counselling by psychiatrists.
As II PU exams are scheduled from March 1, students are feeling the stress as they have to revise the entire subjects before the exams.

A PU department lecturer said most students score less marks or fail due to fear of exams. “To help students overcome exam phobia and motivate them to attend exams with confidence, the department plans to provide free counselling by psychiatrists. They will counsell students on scheduled dates,” he said.

He added that with around 30,000 students giving the PU exams from the district, it’s difficult for a few psychiatrists to provide counselling to all of them. “Psychiatrists will give lecturers tips on how to counsel students and they can guide their students in class,” he said.

Mysuru District Deputy Director Pre-University (DDPU) Dayananda said they have organised free counselling for students. “The previous year, the district was 17th in results and this year, we’re trying to be in the Top 10 in the state. We’re leaving no stone unturned to improve students’ performance,” he said.

Dayananda said various measures have been taken to tackle exam phobia. “Apart from counselling by psychiatrists, we’ll also provide free booklets containing tips on how to prepare for exams. We have started special classes by subject experts who are from the textbook committee and NCERT,” he said.
