  • An Australian mother shared a photo of her shattered glass pool fence
  • She said pool renovations cost $9,000 and that the fence 'randomly' exploded
  • Facebook group users said it's quite common for glass fences to shatter

An Australian woman has been left devastated after her brand new pool fence exploded in the heat leaving shards of sharp glass scattered across her deck.

The mother had just spent $9,000 on renovating her outdoor pool area and said the new fence 'randomly' exploded.

Sharing a picture of the shattered panel on a renovation Facebook group, the woman said she felt lucky to be insured and asked members whether this was a common occurrence.

'Only just spent $9,000 renovating our pool and one of the pool fence panels randomly exploded,' she wrote.

'Thankfully no one was hurt. But now a new fence, decking, pool liner, filter and possibly heating (needed).'

The woman said she's now considering replacing the glass panel with standard black fencing that's already being used on one side of the pool area.

What are possible reasons for glass pool fences shattering?

* Extreme heat

* Poor workmanship

* Faulty supplies. IE: glass not having the Australian Standard stamp

One Facebook user took to the comments section, saying they 'had seen this happen too many times to count'.

Another said it seems common in extreme heat.

'Unfortunately with toughened safety glass when it breaks it explodes into a million pieces,' she said.

'Dramatic changes in temperature is enough to make them explode especially if there was a fixture that was too tight and didn’t allow the glass to expand and contract properly.'

One woman who claimed to work in the industry said it could be down to internal defects within the glass or minor damage during installation.

A Sydney glass pool expert told FEMAIL on Friday that glass fences are known to explode, particularly in very hot weather.

He said to ensure that glass panels upon delivery have the Australian Standard stamp and that glass shattering could simply be down to poor workmanship.
