Balcony crash kills one, injures seven in Cossipore

KOLKATA: One woman was killed and seven were severely injured after a portion of a first-floor balcony of a dilapidated warehouse in Cossipore near Sarbamangala Ghat collapsed on Wednesday.

Cops said the two-storied warehouse, locally known as "Chinikol" at Khagen Chatterjee Lane in Cossipore, houses a labourers' quarters on the first floor and a godown on the ground floor. Around 8.50pm, three women were chatting on the balcony when a portion of it gave away and fell on a group of women, who were standing on the pavement below the balcony.


"The impact severely injured the women, some were even buried under the debris. While locals began the rescue work, our officers, fire brigade and DMG personnel reached the spot and pulled out the women. We shifted them to different hospitals as and when they were pulled out," said a senior officer of Cossipore police station.


According to doctors, the deceased, Manju Singh (54), suffered severe injuries on her head, chest, spine and neck.


Among others, Kasturi Singh (70), Punam Singh (40), Riya Singh (26), Nisha Singh (59) and Madhubala Singh (35) were admitted at SSKM Hospital, Bisuddhananda Hospital, Sanjiboni Nursing Home and Marwari Relief Society respectively. Two other injured women, Anita Singh (51) and Sarda Singh (68), were released after first aid from another nursing home in Shyambazar.
