88 tonnes of banned plastics seized in Jan.

Chennai Corporation has seized 88 tonnes of banned plastics from various parts of the city in January.

According to the data compiled by the civic body, the largest quantity of banned plastics has been seized from outlets in Kodambakkam zone.

The civic officials have seized 16.23 tonnes of banned plastics from Kodambakkam in the past 31 days of the ban. Madhavaram zone reported the lowest amount of banned plastics seized in the month in the city.

Chennai Corporation collected 1.02 tonnes of banned plastics from all the 15 zones in the city on Thursday. The civic body has collected 2.55 tonnes in Tiruvottiyur, 3.23 tonnes in Manali, 4.94 tonnes in Tondiarpet, 11.19 tonnes in Royapuram, 12.84 tonnes in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, 6.09 tonnes in Ambattur, 4.1 tonnes in Anna Nagar, 5.23 tonnes in Teynampet, 6.6 tonnes in Valasaravakkam, 1.97 tonnes in Alandur, 2.43 tonnes in Adyar, 2.73 tonnes in Perungudi and 7.35 tonnes in Sholinganallur in January.

The civic body has planned to permit cement factories to use a portion of the plastics seized from traders.

The seized plastics would also be used for relaying roads. This week, the largest quantity of banned plastics was seized in the city on Monday, after plastics were seized in areas such as Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar.
