‘MPs violated HC, JNU rules by attending protest at varsity’

The JNU administration on Thursday wrote to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha informing them that two Members of Parliament, Manoj Jha and Jitendra Choudhury, had violated the order of the Delhi High Court as well as JNU’s rules and regulations by participating at a protest at the administration block of the university.

The parliamentarians had visited the university to speak at a protest meet organised by the JNUTA on “dilution of reservations in public education”, it said.

JNU administration in its letter wrote, “We write to you with considerable distress regarding an incident today involving parliamentarians, which has violated the order of the High Court of Delhi as well as JNU’s rules and regulations.”

It also said that JNUTA office-bearers misled the Members of Parliament and brought them to the protest at the administration building, which has been prohibited by the High Court for any kind of protest or dharna.

“We do believe that had the Members of Parliament been informed by the JNUTA of this court order and university rules, they would have refrained from joining the JNUTA protest at the administration building,” the letter read.

The university also said it regretted the fact that the Members of Parliament were used by JNUTA office-bearers to lead the protest in a “prohibited area bringing them into the bad light.”

“We are constrained to bring this fact to your kind notice and seek your guidance on honouring the court order and the university rules by Members of Parliament who visit our campus,” the letter said.

The university added that the High Court had last year held a few student leaders in contempt of court and fined them for violating the above court order.
