Odisha: East Coast Railway gets Rs 7,010 crore for projects
Hemanta Pradhan | TNN | Feb 1, 2019, 22:09 ISTBHUBANESWAR: Paradip-Haridaspur new line (82km), one of the oldest and significant railway projects in the state, likely to be completed by end of this year got Rs 400 crore in Interim Budget tabled in the Parliament on Friday.
This project sanctioned in 1996-97 got the highest allocation among other six major new lines in the state. Last year, the Centre had allocated Rs 200 crore for this project.
The project has missed several deadlines. Keeping the project delay in mind, the government has formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV) with the Railways to speed up the work. About 77 per cent work has been over in the line so far.
The Central government has allocated Rs 7,010 crore in the interim budget for development of different railway projects of the East Coast Railway (ECoR). The railway zone has major portion in Odisha and some parts of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Railways sources said fund allotment for new lines this year is Rs 2630 crore, which is 67 per cent more than last year. The allotment for passenger amenities is 181 crore this time while it was 82 crore last year, an increase of 119 per cent.
This year, the railway has focused on speedy construction of old projects. In view of this, it has sanctioned Rs 350 crore for Khurda Road-Bolangir (289 km), Rs 150 crore for Talcher-Bimalagarh new line (154 km), Rs 250 crore for Angul-Sukinda new line.
Other important new projects like Jeypore-Nabarangpur (38 km) and Jeypore-Malkangiri (127 km) new lines received Rs 10 crore and Rs 70 crore respectively. Similarly, major projects like Vizianagaram-Sambalpur third line and Sambalpur-Talcher (174.11km) doubling got Rs 350 crore and Rs 249 crore respectively.
ECoR sources said it has not calculated the allocation to Odisha, but it may touch Rs 7,000 crore after adding Odisha regions of South Eastern Railway and South East Central Railway with the ECoR. The state had received Rs 5252 crore in 2018 and Rs 5102 in 2017, Rs 4,682 crore in 2016-17 and Rs 3,712 crore in 2015-16 budgets.
