The trend of youngsters shying away from the election process finally seems to be reversing as Chennai has witnessed an increase of nearly 25 per cent new voters’ enrolment in 2019.

In the final electoral roll released in 2018, there were only 35,194 first-time voters enrolled in the list, which is 8,635 lesser than the youngsters enrolled in 2019.
According to the final electoral roll, 2019, there are 38,18,999 voters in the Chennai district that has 16 Assembly constituencies and the trend of women voters outnumbering male voters continued. “Of the total voters in the district, 19,34,078 are women and 18,83,989 are men. There are 932 third gender voters in the city,” Karthikeyan said.
In the draft list released in September, the city had 37,92,126 voters. As many as 1,16,385 applied for the inclusion and 1,11,104 names were included. However, the Corporation has removed 80,293 names from the electoral list.
Meanwhile, a Chennai Corporation press release said that the voters can verify the final electoral list by visiting www.elections.tn.gov.in and at respective zonal offices.

Breaking the trend of women outnumbering men when it comes to electoral lists, city’s boys have outnumbered girls in this revision.
As per the final revised voters roll released on Thursday, by Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner and District Election Officer D Karthikeyan, 43,829 first-time voters (18 years of age) have enrolled their names as voters. “Of the total 43,829 first-time voters, 23,816 voters are male and 20,004 are female voters. Nine new voters are third gender. Voters identity cards to the first time voters will be distributed immediately,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
