AHMEDABAD: A test run of the much-awaited Ahmedabad Metro was held at the Apparel Park track in Maninagar on Thursday. The 1km trial run was conducted at speeds ranging from 20km to 35km per hour.
Senior AMC officials, who were present on the occasion, said that in the next round trial runs would be held for longer durations.
“In the final stage, the Metro will be tested for its highest speed of 90km per hour,” said an official.
According to the officials, a team of Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), under the ministry of railways, will be arriving in Gujarat by February 15 and a test run will be conducted in the presence of the team members.
The officials of RDSO will be campaigning in Ahmedabad for nearly six days before certifying that the train is fit for commercial run.
The officials said that after the RDSO visit, the commissioner of railway safety is expected to come to the city. The safety team too will check all the parameters for nearly three to four days, added the AMC officials.
“We have written to the government that the Metro will be ready for commercial run by March first week. There is a possibility that if the general elections are not announced, the Prime Minister may inaugurate the same,” said the senior officer.
The government has already asked Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited to complete all formalities before February 28 so that the inauguration can be done before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections.
The first train set of GMRC had arrived on January 1 this year. The second set is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad by February 7 after which tests and trials will be conducted on that set of trains too.
The first commercial run of the train will be held on the 6km stretch on Apparel Park to Vastral route.
