Cong-JD(S) will win over 20 LS seats: Shivanand Patil
TNN | Feb 1, 2019, 06:38 ISTBelagavi: Despite internal problems in Congress and JD(S), the coalition will win more than 20 seats in the state in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, said health and family welfare minister Shivanand Patil.
He spoke to reporters on the side-lines of a meeting of Congress leaders and office bearers from Belagavi, Begalkot and Vijayapura districts to discuss preparations for the Lok Sabha elections here on Thursday. The minister clarified that internal disputes between both parties will not affect Lok Sabha elections.
The meeting was held under the headship of AICC secretary Manickam Tagore and many ticket aspirants took part. Tagore got the opinions from both sitting and former MPs and MLAs on the candidature for both Lok Sabha seats of the district - Belagavi and Chikkodi. A majority of leaders suggested that tickets be given to a Lingayat candidate in Belagavi.
Former MLA Ashok Pattan later told reporters that he had suggested that the ticket be given to a candidate from upper caste from Belagavi. “I am ready to contest if the party gives me the chance,” he said.
Another leader Nagaraj Yadav said he was ready to contest from Belagavi if the high-command prefers giving the ticket to a candidate from backward community. “Our only aim is defeating BJP,” he added.
Former MP Shanmukhappa Sidnal sought a ticket for his son Shivakant Sidnal.
Later KPCC general secretary PV Mohan told reporters that the Congress would win the Belagavi Lok Sabha seat by defeating BJP MP Suresh Angadi. He clarified that there was no chance for an internal match-fixing by Congress leaders with other party leaders during the elections.
Congress district president Vinay Navalagatti, city unit president Raju Sait and all block level office bearers were present.
