VARANASI: Nearly 132 sheep and lambs died at a cattle-shed in a village of Gyanpur area in Bhadohi district on Wednesday night after being reportedly attacked by stray dogs.
Officials said on Thursday that several carcasses carried injury marks but refused to comment on the exact cause of deaths, saying the autopsy reports were awaited. “A team of officials has been formed to estimate the loss to finalise the compensation to be paid to the owner of the animals,” said Bhadohi district magistrate Rajendra Prasad.

Officials said one Jhallar Pal of Lakhno village in Gyanpur police station area had kept his 210 sheep and lambs in a shed adjacent to his house. On Thursday morning, over 100 animals were found dead, while several others were lying injured.

Pal reported the matter to the Gyanpur police. Taking note of the incident, Bhadohi district magistrate Rajendra Prasad rushed a team of veterinary officials along with an SDM, tehsildar and police to the site. “The injured animals were taken to the local veterinary hospital,” said the DM.

“According to initial investigation, it is suspected that some stray dogs attacked the sheep. While a few apparently died of injuries caused by the dogs, it seems most of them died due to suffocation after being herd together. In all, 132 sheep and lambs have died,” he added.

ADM Ram Singh Verma, who will prepare a report and also estimate the compensation to be paid to Pal on the DM’s directive, said: “The actual cause of the animals’ death would be clear after we get the autopsy report on Friday. We will decide on the compensation amount after proper investigation.”

The incident came as a shock to Pal and his family members. His son was rushed to a local hospital after he fell unconscious on seeing the carcasses. Pal said that it was a severe jolt for him and his family as their livelihood depended on these animals. “The incident has taken place at a time when we were preparing for our daughter’s marriage scheduled on February 7,” he added.
