VELLORE: A nurse working in a private hospital in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu smothered her three-year-old son on Wednesday after her parents asked her to return to her in-laws’ home.
Police said G Sandiya, 21, of Vellanayakneri Agarathandavam village, got married to Saravanan, 27, of Thagarakuppam village four years ago. A son was born to the couple in a year. Around three years ago, following a quarrel with her husband, Sandiya went back to her parents’ home with her son, Viroshan.
She stayed in her parents’ home and worked in a private hospital at Natrampalli. Saravanan went abroad for work two years ago.
Recently, Sandiya’s lawyer sent a divorce notice to Saravanan’s home. After coming to know about it from his parents, Saravanan contacted Sandiya’s parents over phone on Wednesday. He told them that he wanted them to hand over Viroshan to his parents.
Concerned about the future of their daughter, Sandiya’s parents advised her to return to her in-laws’ house. Angered over their advice, Sandiya smothered Viroshan with a bedsheet, according to police.
On Wednesday afternoon, relatives and parents of Sandiya saw Viroshan lying unconscious with frothing on the mouth. They rushed him to Natrampalli Government Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Family members, who suspected a foul play, alerted revenue officials on the same day. Acting on a complaint filed by Natrampalli revenue inspector Karthick, the Thimmapet police arrested Sandiya. Based on her confession, they registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC.
She was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday night.
