Canberra Now: Childcare costs still high; and politician graduation row
Happy Friday, Canberra!
How about that cool change? We're looking at two whole days below 30 degrees with a top of 25 expected today and 28 on Saturday. (You can wear pants again!) Things will start to warm up come Sunday but should cool down again by early next week.
Here's what else you need to know this morning in Canberra:
Canberrans still paying the most for childcare in the country
Unfortunately, when it comes to childcare, the story for Canberra hasn't changed.
New data shows we're still paying the highest rates in the country for childcare, despite also having what appear to be the riskiest services in the country. Along with the highest price tag, ACT services also had the highest reported rate of serious incidents in the country.
Cassandra Morgan broke down the figures here (and for a peek inside the latest ACT school funding figures from the same report, you can read our story here).
Canberra taxi investors seek compensation from ACT Government
Narelle's husband had a plan to secure her financial security after he was gone. The plan didn't work out.
Narelle says their savings have been decimated because of changes made to the ACT government's system for licensing taxis.
Steve Evans found out more and has the story here.
Motocross and 'dueling excavators' bring the roar to Canberra Show
The Canberra Show promises more than just wood chopping this year - the main arena will also be taken over by the roar of motorbikes, cars and excavators.
Bree Winchester has got all the details on the new "daredevil" line-up.
ACT minister left schools in dark for months over graduations
A spate of pesky politicians inviting themselves to school graduations caused "stress" in the ACT Education Directorate, internal emails have revealed.
Education Minister Yvette Berry left some Canberra schools waiting more than two months for responses to invitations to attend graduation ceremonies last year, during a lengthy dispute with Speaker Joy Burch about her visiting schools.
Ms Burch was apparently asked to "stand down" from attending ceremonies and handing out her own awards.
Daniel Burdon has more.
We tried: a 'Game of Thrones' enzyme facial
Our intrepid lifestyle reporter Serena Coady put the Game of Thrones facial to the test - so-named for how it dilates capillaries and... well... flatters your White-Walker visage.
A little off brand for GoT, no one was hurt but Serena's story is not for the faint hearted.
