Kanpur: Private parties will clean the ghats of river Ganga in Kanpur Nagar. Four companies have submitted bids for taking up the task and a decision in this regard will be taken soon,” Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials said on Thursday.
“The corporation is presently cleaning the ghats through its regular employees. After awarding of the job to a private company some time in February itself, the corporation would only monitor the cleaning of ghats,” KMC executive engineer (environment) RK Pal told TOI on Thursday.
“So far, KMC used to depute its sanitation employees from respective wards for cleaning ghats which affected work in the wards. Moreover, in the absence of regular cleaning, huge dumps of garbage in the shape of polythene, prayer material and used flowers was gathering on the ghats,” he said.
To overcome this problem, it has been decided to pass on the work of cleaning ghats to private parties. KMC has already floated a tender and four companies have submitted bids.
The bids would be finalised soon and perhaps from next week cleaning of ghats would be handed over to a private company, he added.
Pal said in the beginning as many as 20 ghats had been identified for cleaning through private parties, including Barrage Ghat, Rani Ghat, Bhairo Ghat, Magzine Ghat, Aspatal Ghat, Parmat Ghat, Baba Ghat, Sarsaiya Ghat, Bhagwatdas Ghat, Guptar Ghat, Gola Ghat, Sattichaura Ghat, Massacre Ghat and Siddhanath Ghat.
