FALL RIVER -- Notices went out on Friday to city retailers left with excess purple bags after Mayor Jasiel Correia II announced Tuesday the immediate end to the pay-as-you-throw program.

While the retailers may expect that the city will reimburse the store retailers with excess inventory, residents holding the bag on extra bags won’t likely see any refunds.

WasteZero, the company that managed the program, has sent letters to retailers stating that the city doesn’t expect stores to accept returns from customers or to give any refund for bags already purchased.

However, the company said the city is “committed to refunding” the businesses for any inventory of the city issued bags that were previously paid for to WasteZero.

The company plans to schedule pick-up times to retrieve the extra bag inventory.
