God wanted Trump to be president, says Sarah Sanders
Washington: God wanted Donald Trump to become US president, the White House press secretary has said in an interview.
Sarah Sanders made the comment during a conversation with the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), which was shown on Thursday.
David Brody, a political analyst for the station, asked Ms Sanders: "Does it kind of blow your mind" that Mr Trump was elected to the Oval Office.
Ms Sanders responded: "I think God calls all of us to fill different roles at different times, and I think that He wanted Donald Trump to become -president and that's why he's there.
"And I think he has done a tremendous job in supporting a lot of the things that people of faith really care about."
Trump won support from large swathes of the evangelical community during his presidential campaign. Since taking office, he has appointed two supreme court judges, securing a conservative majority on the bench a development that could shape American life for decades to come.
His drive to appoint conservative judges, as well as his pro-life stance on abortion, is seen as a critical factor behind the support he has enjoyed from some evangelicals.
Sanders also criticised Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the house of representatives, for saying a wall along the US-Mexico border would be "immoral".
"Honestly, it's very hard at this point to even take a lecture from Democrats on what is moral and what isn't," Sanders said, according to a transcript of the interview shared by CBN.
Brody recently coauthored a book called The Faith of Donald J. Trump: A Spiritual Biography.
Trump tweeted that it was "a very interesting read".
