Nagpur: The city has not got any new big development project from the union budget, but a slew of ongoing and proposed projects have reportedly got provision of funds for completion or continuation.
BJP city president Sudhakar Kohle said the city is all set to feature among top cities of the country once ongoing projects are completed. “PM Narendra Modi, union minister Nitin Gadkari and CM Devendra Fadnavis had approved large number of projects in last four years. Number of projects in last four years are many times more than those obtained in over 60 years. Our target is to finish the ongoing projects. This budget was for poor, labour and farmers sectors,” he said.
Congress city president Vikas Thakre said the budget was a big jolt to the city. “All were expecting some big projects for the city with Gadkari at the centre and Fadnavis at the helm of the state. Ongoing Metro Rail project, works related to drinking water infrastructure etc were all planned by the Congress government. Therefore, BJP has totally failed to ensure city’s development,” he said.
Former mayor and BJP corporator Pravin Datke said provisions of funds for proposed projects like international sports stadium and regional centre of Sports Authority of India (SAI), Smart City, AMRUT etc have been made in the budget. “Schemes under which ongoing projects were approved have been continued. Therefore, all these projects will be completed within deadline and without paucity of funds,” he said.
Shiv Sena group leader in NMC Kishor Kumeriya said the budget was a big disappointment for the city. “Sena welcomes projects like Metro Rail, cement roads, flyovers etc. But these projects are planned for city’s future. The government has failed to understand actual needs of the city. Lakhs of people are residing in outer areas where there are no basic amenities like drinking water, power, street lights, sewage, roads etc. A special package for executing works should have been announced in these areas under AMRUT or any other scheme,” he said.
Metro Rail phase-II of Rs11,216 crore is also missing from the budget as union cabinet is yet to clear it. Probably, the proposed project will find place in final budget to be presented in July.
Comprehensive mobility plan of Rs33,284 crore including Metro Rail phase-II and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) also did not feature in the budget.
BJP leaders were expecting some defence related projects in MIHAN, but that too did not materialize.
During his city visit a couple of months ago, finance minister Piyush Goyal, who is also railway minister, had announced a high speed rail corridor along Samruddhi Mahamarg. But the project was not there in the budget.
